It is vain to do with more
what can be done with less.
William of Occam (1295-1350)
- Originally, QRP is a Q-group of the international Q-Code and means "Reduce your transmitting power"
or as question "Shall I reduce my transmitting power?"
- Nowadays
"QRP" is an international movement with the aim carrying out radio
communication with small and very small transmitting power, especially
on the shortwave bands. "QRP" enthusiasts strive to make radio contacts
with low-power transmitters.
"QRP" means equally homemade radio equipment, aerials and accessories
like Morse keys, antenna tuners, SWR meters, and so on.
"QRP" is, unfortunately, often equated or mixed up with "provisional",
"makeshift", "primitive", or "temporary".
But that is simply wrong!
- On
the contrary: "QRPer" are usually radio amateurs who really enjoy
handicrafting and radio communicating and know how to handle a
soldering iron, yet. The small output power requires a profound
knowledge in radio operation and RF technology.
- "QRP" is in respect to the output power defined as a maximum of 5W RF with CW or 10W PEP in SSB.
-
Only someone, who knows from experience what
it means to communicate with low power and homemade equipment big
distances, is in a position to understand the euphoria of the QRPer...
Have fun with QRP and home-made RF-equipment!
